School Nurse Links Quaker Values to Core Nursing Values

The School Nurse, Tyler Troppman (pictured above with Nurse's Aide Tamika Lynch), now in his second year at Friends, has embraced the School’s sense of community. He likens the six Quaker values, known as the “SPICES”—simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality and stewardship—to the six core nursing values: care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment. “I think that Quaker ideals go hand in hand with the foundations of nursing,” he said. “There’s a focus on the community, treating people as equals, and striving to be the best self you can to benefit others.”

Tyler is anticipating a more normal year but plans to continue to work closely with administrators to address the ongoing impact of the pandemic. He comments, “While Covid has quieted considerably, we’re expecting a particularly hard-hitting flu season. We’re encouraging everyone to get the flu vaccine before the start of the flu season in December.” The mitigation measures put in place to prevent the spread of Covid, such as air filtration and use of hand sanitizer, will help reduce Influenza, which like Covid is transmitted through airborne and droplet particles.
