Because Dan Anderson, husband of Kindergarten teacher Judy Anderson ’66, donated his time and expertise, the Seth Thomas clock, which has hung in the lobby of the Meetinghouse for more than 50 years, is now working for the first time in more than 15 years. A versatile problem solver, Dan took the clock home to his workshop in Bloomfield, New Jersey where he meticulously examined, cleaned and repaired the much-loved clock. Dan commented, “The double movement was broken beyond repair so I replaced it with a new quartz high torque movement to propel the clock’s enormous hands.” Both the School community and members of the New York Quarterly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends are grateful for Dan’s efforts.

The clock, manufactured in the early 1900s, originally hung in the former Friends Meetinghouse on 20th Street in Gramercy Park. When the building was sold to the Brotherhood Synagogue in 1974, the clock was moved to the 15th Street Meetinghouse. Head of School Bo Lauder comments, “I recall the weekly ritual of winding the clock that was shared among faculty and staff, which was once part of the bustle of daily school life.” Today the clock runs automatically and will need a new battery once a year.
