This fall, Head of the Upper School, Blair Parker has asked faculty, staff and parents to think about ways to develop the growth mindset, a concept first put forth by Carol Dweck in 2007. Dweck’s simple and convincing case on the importance of helping students to see setbacks as opportunities for growth continues to resonate among educators. Blair has called on faculty to re-familiarize themselves with Dweck’s work by reading Why Mindset Matters, updated in 2017. Blair comments, “Faculty can come to their roles through their discipline or education. As a historian, I tend to avoid educational jargon but her ideas are simple and effective. I would like us all to think about the types of feedback and assessment we give our students, informally and formally, and to ask ourselves how it does or doesn’t foster growth.” Click here to see Carol Dweck’s Ted Talk.
