The Center for Peace Equity and Justice (CPEJ) partnered with the Latinx Culture Club to create enriching programming in celebration of National Hispanic American Heritage Month (Sept 15 to Oct 15). The celebration began with a visit to El Museo de Barrio to see Sandra Cisneros, Mexican-American poet, essayist and fiction writer read from her latest book of poetry, Mujer sin vergüenza (Woman Without Shame). Cisneros is a recipient of the American Book Award and the MacArthur Genius Grant and most notably known for A House on Mango Street.

In October, American-born Colombian soccer player, Melissa Oritz gave an inspiring talk to Upper School students in the Meetinghouse. She shared her story of growing up in a largely white affluent neighborhood and the importance of discovering her own identity, which led to her decision to play for Columbia’s national soccer team. She implored students to “work outside their comfort zones.”

Head of School Bo Lauder led a Latinx art discussion for students, faculty and staff, showcasing five works on paper. He unveiled Amantes (Lover), a screen print by Dominican-American artist Tiffany Alfonseca that will hang in Hunter Hall or the Townhouse Building. Click here to read more about Bo’s talk.

In addition, Upper School students played Jeopardy: Latinx Heritage Edition and enjoyed Flag Day, during which they dressed in the colors of a Latin American country of their choice. Students also had the opportunity to participate in affinity groups.
